| North Carolina | North Carolina May 16 - 23, 2003 Before leaving VA, We rent a car, and drived to NC to say good-bye to our friends in NC. Of course Nancy & David in Seagrove but also Michael Hunt, Rock Creek Pottery, and Michael Sherrill who are living in Penland area. Total milage was almost 800 miles, and we are very satisfied of our last driving in USA. |

| Visited to Mark Hewitt, Pittsboro, NC Feb 7, 2003 Suddenly Mark Hewitt came to our friend, David's house on Feb 6 night, and he invited us to join their lunch on 7th. So I went to his studio in Pittsboro. He is well-known large-scale potter. He showed us his studio, kiln, and gallery. After that, we had lunch in his house. He has been in Japan twice, and we talked about Japanese ceramics. It was very fun. |

| Penland, NC Feb 5, 2003 I went to Penland, 5 hours driving from Seagrove, and met my good friend Jeff at the Penland School of Crafts. And then visited to Rock Creek Pottery ( Will Ruggles and Douglass Rankin's studio). There are so many potters in Penland. |

| Visited to North Carolina Feb 1 to 8, 2003 We were fortunate we could visit and stay in NC for a week, and we went to many pottery in Seagrove. This photo is the NC Pottery Center, it's located in the center of Seagrove. There is beautiful museum, ceramics studio, Anagama kiln and two chamber wood kiln. It reminds me when I was in Shigaraki because both of towns are pottery villages. I stayed at my friend's house in Seagrove, and I could meet so many potters. |

| Washington DC | Washington DC May 5 - 8, 2003 We were very lucky to see Smithonian Institute for 3 days in this time. The Freer had very nice exhibition of Isamu Noguchi, and we were able to see many ceramic works of him and also some Japanese ceramics. |

| Wood Firing at Cub Creek Studio, Appomattox, VA March 2003 We have started loading kiln in March 1. It has been bad weather for a week, but finally it became good day on March 1. Everybody worked very hard, so that we finished loading kiln quickly. John has made 6 big platters for his show in Cortland NY, and we did stuck these plates on the side in the kiln. We started firing on March 2, Sunday Evening. While the beginning part of firing, we used gas burner, after candling for 24 hours by gas, we started to use fire wood. We have been keeping firing for 3 days so far. After first chamber firing, we had started firing on the 2nd and 3rd chamber. We finally finished whole firing on Mar 7, Friday night. We did unloading kiln on March 15th. Results: Hitomi's Works Takuro's Works |

| Finally my space is all set Jan 15, 2003 Since I moved to the Cub Creek Studio, Appomattox, VA, I have been setting up my life, studio space, clay and tool, and so on. Finally I have just started my own work here recently. I am using natural digging very red clay behind of this studio and it seems to work well. John and us will have an wood firing in the end of February ( it was postponed a little bit). I am very exiting about it. |

| Visited to the Richmond University, Richmond, VA Feb 18, 2003 Mr. Addis ( see the below) invited us to the Richmond University fortunately, and we could join the Zen calligraphy workshop. The great Zen-master whose name is Keido Fukushima from Kyoto, Japan has been visiting to USA and giving Zen workshop. He gave wonderful demonstration for students and drew 10 calligraphy in the very quiet atmosphere. It was the spiritual Zen beauty. |

| Visited to Professor Steve Addis, Richmond, VA Feb 14. 2003 Randy-san ( Professor of the Longwood Univ.) took us to Mr. Addis's house on Valentines day. Mr. Addis is a Professor of the Richmond University and also well-known researcher of Japanese calligraphy and Zen culture. He showed us a lot of nice old pots because he is a great Japanese ceramics collector. It was very interesting collections and we were very impressed about that.
